  • 470 gr. precooked cornmeal
  • 500 ml. of water
  • 2 cups of grated cheese
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of onoto oil (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of wheat flour
  • 1 plastic bag
  • Salt
  • Vegetable oil

Preparation of Venezuelan cheese empanadas

  1. If you want to add color to your empanadas, you have two options: use yellow cornmeal or use a natural coloring called onoto. You can also leave them without color, it’s a matter of taste.
  2. That said, to prepare everything, start by adding 1/4 cup of vegetable oil in a small saucepan and mixing it with a teaspoon of onoto. Cook it over low heat until the seeds release their color. Remove from the fire and when it is tempered strain it. Booking.
  3. Add the water in a bowl, add the sugar, wheat flour, salt to taste and mix to dissolve.
  4. Add to this bowl slowly the corn flour, a tablespoon of onoto oil and knead with your hands until you get a compact mixture.
  5. Let it rest for five minutes and if you feel that it is very hard you can add a little more water, it should be soft but not watery to prevent the patties from breaking before frying them.
  6. Next, spread the plastic bag or plastic sheet on the kitchen table, spread it with a little oil and roll the dough into a small ball. Flatten it with your hands so that you get a circle, add a generous spoonful of cheese in the center and close in half to form a crescent.
  7. Next, mark the edges of your patty with the help of a plate, remove it from the plastic carefully and remove the excess. Repeat the procedure until you finish with all the dough.
  8. Heat plenty of vegetable oil in a pan and fry them. When your cheese patties are golden brown on both sides, after about ten minutes on the fire, remove them to a plate with absorbent paper and they will be ready to eat. Enjoy!
