Ingredients for 8-10 arepas:
- Half a kilo of precooked cornmeal
- 250 ml of water
- 250 ml milk
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 liter of corn oil
Preparation of Venezuelan fried arepas
- To make the dough for your fried arepitas, the first thing you should do is place the milk, water, butter and a teaspoon of salt in a spacious container. Heat in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes to allow the liquid to warm and the salt and butter to dissolve.
- Remove from the microwave, stir well and then begin to add the cornmeal little by little, stirring constantly so that it mixes correctly.
- When you have added half a kilo of flour, begin to knead with your hands. It is important that the dough of your arepas is soft and manageable, if it is very watery you will have to add a little more flour, while if it is hard and cracks form when making a ball, then add more liquid to soften it.
- When the dough is ready, taste it to make sure it is not lacking in salt, if so add a little more, stir and let it rest for 2 minutes. While pouring the liter of corn oil in a spacious pan and heat over medium heat.
- Take a portion of dough and make a medium size ball, it should be smooth and without cracks. Then you should flatten the ball with the help of your hands, patting it gently with both hands until you have a round arepa approximately one centimeter thick.
- With the amount of dough you have prepared, you can make between 8 and 10 arepas. Once the oil is very hot, at approximately 170 ºC, fry the arepas and candles until they are very golden on both sides.
- Remove the arepas from the oil and place them on a plate covered with absorbent paper to remove excess fat and make sure they are crispy and delicious.
- You just have to serve your delicious hot fried Venezuelan arepas with a little cream, scrambled egg, grated white cheese, shredded meat, butter, or whatever you prefer! Be that as it may, they are always to suck your fingers.
